Shrine Empire Art Gallery
How might we manipulate natural light throughout the day to create different moods and atmospheres within the space, enhancing the dynamic experience?
Good art stirs conversations. And hence, the natural extension of the Shrine Empire Art Gallery was a space for discussion and discourse. We wanted to create a seamless transition from the art viewing experience to the space for conversations. Using partial partitions and a central movable partition, we created gentle demarcations between different zones to carry forward the flow of people and ideas.
One of the most notable design features of the space is the use of natural light. Located in the basement, we opened up the skylight to let natural light flood into the area. To further accentuate this element, a double-height concrete-panelled wall was erected. The use of light creates a dramatic interplay with shadows, giving the space an added layer of visual interest that is further enhanced by the sense of dynamism choreographed by the movement of the sun throughout the day.
We also introduced a central co-working and reading zone quietly tucked behind the movable partition.
By carefully considering how people would move through the space and how it would contribute to the gallery’s overall atmosphere, we were able to create a space that truly feels special. It’s a space that invites visitors to linger and engage, further cementing the gallery’s reputation as a hub for art and conversation
